About Us

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) is a non-profit organization that was created to educate, promote and certify professionals in the solid waste management field. SWANA currently has 45 chapters throughout the United States and Canada.

SWANA honored the SWANA Caribbean Puerto Rico Chapter its provisional chapter status during the Trade Show Reception at WASTECON 2008 (Tampa, Florida). The chapter was recognized as an official entity at WASTECON 2009 in Long Beach, California by the referenced international association.

The chapter was founded in Puerto Rico and consists of members, including Board of Directors and Board of Officials members, located in various Caribbean islands (e.g.: U.S. Virgin Islands, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia, among others). Our chapter brings together representatives of regulatory agencies, legal and environmental consultants, private companies and collection operating solid waste management facilities. The Chapter has been actively offering certification courses in the operation of landfills, recycling systems, variety of technical seminars and others in the Caribbean region. As professionals, we maintain continuous contact and communication with other organizations, which unite efforts in various fields to carry out activities, such as the Florida Chapter of SWANA, the College of Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico (Institute of Chemical Engineers and Environmental Engineers), AIDIS-PR, and other environmental associations represented in the region.

Many of our active members, of the different islands, are SWANA certified in Management of Landfill Operations (MOLO), Management of Collection and Transfer Systems, Management of Recycling Systems, Composting Programs, Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM), among others.

The SWANA Caribbean chapter is represented in SWANA Young Professionals group, focus group focused in attracting and educating emerging professionals in the solid waste industry. To learn more about this group, contact Ms. Hanna K. Rodríguez Morales (ibrep@swanacaribbean.com), representative of our chapter in SWANA's International Board.
