2017.06 PAYT Seminar

"Pay as You Throw" programs establish a mechanism of direct charge by the service of collection and disposal of solid waste. These programs typically provide alternatives for the resident to remove recyclable materials from the disposal stream by incentivizing segregation, which reduces the resident's payment and encourages recycling.

In order to guide Puerto Rican municipalities on the best practices and mechanisms to achieve the effective implementation of "Pay as You Throw" programs at the local level, our chapter has set out with the task of identifying well-versed resources that will discuss this charging structure of collection and disposal services of solid waste in general (such as domestic waste), its different modalities and benefits. The evaluation from participants for the activity held last Wednesday, June 28, 2017 was rated as excellent in both in its program technical content and the table discussions.

Our chapter hopes to join efforts with associations such as the Municipal Recycling Coordinators' Coalition (CCOREM, per its Spanish acronym) to continue providing such structured events for the benefit of the waste management industry.
