Cayman Islands

As is the case in many islands in the Caribbean, the population in the Cayman Islands has grown significantly in the past several decades. Currently, their main waste management option is a disposal facility in Grand Cayman Island, the George Town Landfill. There are smaller disposal facilities located in the smaller islands, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

Recently, reliability on collection has increased in proportion to its regularity and efficiency. The Cayman Islands Department of Environmental Health (DEH) has provided curb side waste collection services.

The George Town Landfill has a recycling area where materials, such as those listed below, are prepared and shipped overseas.

    • Lead acid batteries
    • Waste oil
    • Aluminium cans
    • Office paper, and others

The islands have multi-purpose waste incinerators at their disposal in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac islands, where biomedical waste, confidential documents and other special wastes are incinerated by appointment or after receipt of proper license. Large waste is welcome at the landfills and is also collected through DEH special bulk waste cleanup programs.
