SWANA is the leading source of information and training programs for solid waste management professionals. SWANA has conferences and symposiums year round and by means of certifications, publications, and technical training courses has trained thousands of solid waste professionals, both in the public and private sector, in today's trends and tomorrow's emerging technologies. SWANA’s Certification are widely recognized as a standard technical achievement for solid waste professionals.
Between 2008 to 2009, a group of solid waste professionals in Puerto Rico started an initiative to found the SWANA Caribbean – Puerto Rico Chapter (SWANA Caribbean-Puerto Rico). Over the years, the SWANA Caribbean-Puerto Rico has incorporated over 60 members not only from Puerto Rico, but also from other islands such as the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti, the Cayman Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Knowledge of applicable waste management best practices is vital in order to improve operations, including managerial aspects, and ensure compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements as well as protecting the environment and occupational health and safety. SWANA Caribbean-PR Chapter leaders will continue to work towards providing such professional education in our Caribbean Region.
